Nordstrom Trend Show – Miami 2011

Year after year, I look forward to the Nordstrom Trend Show, and this year’s production was as entertaining as watching their crowd of well-dressed ladies bolt for a red-carpeted entrance in hopes of snagging a front-row seat for the action.

Luckily, my blogger status guaranteed me front row access (but not without the occasional elbow to the rib). Still, I’m happy to share my experience (and slight bruises) with you.

Below, some snapshots of the action at the Merrick Park location of one of my favorite places. If you’re still looking for a gift, this is one of the few places I know of that isn’t completely unbearable during the usual holiday madness.

Click here to keep up with year-round events. We may even get to share a glass of bubbly, or two…

HOME ALONE: The Sender Collection

I had a rare opportunity to take in HOME ALONE: The Sender Collection last night at the now-vacant North Bay Road home of private collector Adam Sender. The exhibit, curated by Sarah Aibel, coincided with the beginning of Art Basel Miami Beach, and is cheekily themed around the idea of what kind of mischief might ensue when a collector leaves his art at home alone.

Of the 70 featured items, many are making their United States debut. Below, a few quick snapshots of the likes of Urs Fischer, Jim Lambie, Jack Pierson, Gilbert & George, and Lawrence Weiner.

South Miami Farmer’s Market

Saturday mornings at the South Miami Farmer’s Market are quickly becoming a treasured weekend ritual. My favorites are the french pastries and espresso stand at the head of the tiny strip, the nameless Peruvian ceviche stand that also sells some of the freshest guac and salsa I’ve ever tried, Crackerman’s herb humus and German bread, and, most recently, the Cheesecake Gallery’s petite bites of happiness. There are also a few stands with fresh produce, organic honey, and enough ingredients to make you want to take on cooking as a serious pass-time. Check it out on Sunset & 61st Ave if you’re in the area. The Market opens at 9:00 a.m. and runs until 12:00 p.m. every Saturday.

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Brickell, Downtown, The Roads

Join us this weekend on Watson Island for the first American Cancer Society Relay for Life of the Roads, Brickell, and Downtown. Free music, entertainment, and art over an eighteen-hour celebration of life for those who have beat cancer, are living with it, and will not lose hope of finding a cure for this disease that affects so many.

Not Just Cakes by Patty

Congratulations to Not Just Cakes by Patty on their Grand Opening last Saturday! Tony and I dropped by their quaint little shop last week to say hello and thank them for the delicious birthday cupcakes in Dulce de Leche, Red Velvet, and Guava flavors with just-sweet-enough, cream cheese icing. Turns out, we were their first order. Some things are just meant to be… If you’re in the Sunset area, check them out in the same shopping center as the Sports Grill.

Date Night: SoundScape Cinema Series Miami

Bring a blanket and some snacks to enjoy a cinematic evening under the stars at the ExoStage on the corner of 17th Street and Washington Ave.

A Day with the Girls

Sometimes all you need is a day with the girls to lift your spirits (and perhaps some other areas that may also need, ahem, a lift). I spent the day at the Terribly Girly studios yesterday with my friend, Nicole. This was her first time experiencing the hard work and production that goes into each of these sessions.

After a few hours in wardrobe, hair, and makeup, she asked if I could remember my first shoot and how I got started in the first place. Turns out, I was feeling a little low and decided to treat myself to something fun. It was around Christmas, I was living alone, feeling lonely, and coming out of a bad relationship that had left me with more than a few self-esteem issues. The minute I stepped into the TG studio, all that stuff was pushed out of my mind. The girls were friendly, confident, and encouraging – and SO talented!

Nine shoots later, I’m glad these women are keen on making a point about beauty and self-image. I may not be a cookie-cutter beauty, but they don’t seem to mind – and neither do I.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots from another wonderful day of playing dress-up:

Unconventional

I can hardly sit still today. This weekend is packed with colorful plans and I want to jump right in. My appointment with Maytee is only a few hours away and I honestly can’t contain my excitement about getting tattooed again. It’s been over 5 years since my last meaningful piece and these things are always cathartic for me. I’m only a little bummed that my little sister will have to sit this one out due to a nasty throat infection… but it only gives us an excuse to keep coming back .

Also, on Sunday I’ll be shooting with Miss Valentine and all the lovely ladies of Terribly Girly. I’m not quite sure what the end result will be, but at this point, I don’t even worry. I know they’re creative enough to come up with something interesting and fresh, so let’s just put on some eyeliner and see what happens.

Check back soon! I’ll be documenting everything. xo
