“If These Hats Could Tawk” Opens July 13
Spend just a few minutes in Miami and you’re well aware that there’s no shortage of color in the spectrum of our characters. Our locals, whether born-and-bred or transplants, are not afraid to make a statement. So was the legacy of Irene Williams. Anyone who grew up in Miami knows the ’80’s and ’90’s were an eccentric time for our city. Now, in a pop-up show that aims to celebrate what would have been her 100th birthday, If These Hats Could Tawk is bringing that colorful eccentricity to the forefront.
Magique at Faena Hotel Miami Beach: A Very Sexy Night Out
First things first, it’s been a very long time since my husband and I went out to do anything that falls under the category of sexy/fun/sophisticated and/or exciting. I wish I were joking or exaggerating the truth for the sake of good commentary, but the fact is that we are going on eight years of marriage and the past four of those have been spent parenting a very independent child. So it is without any reservation that I can admit to you, my dear readers, that when the invitation to a sexy magic show at Faena Hotel Miami Beach showed up in my inbox, I was not only confused (really – I checked to make sure they meant me), but nearly leapt through the screen to RSVP and secure our spot.
Florida Supercon 2015
Tony and I made it out to Florida Supercon today. After two hours of standing in line outside the Miami Beach Convention Center, we finally made our way in to walk through endless rows of superfan goodies and tons of amazing cosplay. Here’s a recap of everything we saw today. Continue reading
Spa Days: Acqualina in Sunny Isles Beach
While the rest of the country shovels its way through snow, I feel almost guilty pulling up to the palm trees and ocean views that welcome me at the beachfront Sunny Isles location Acqualina calls home. There are rows of Rolls Royce lined up on the sides of the valet ramp, not unlike other places in South Florida. What is rare, however, is the peaceful respite that takes me in once I walk past the front desk and make my way to the spa. I’m welcomed with mint tea and and a fresh towel for my face and hands. And for the first time in about an hour and a half of traffic and typical Miami congestion, I am able to really exhale.
Bonefish Grill Menu Launch
When Bonefish Grill tells you they’re going to cook for you on a yacht while Mario Lopez hangs out and David Correy sings, you go. You just go.
Benetton Beach Bash on Collins
Benetton will be celebrating its new summer collection with music, discounts, and frozen yogurt to cool you off. If you’re in the area, stop by and enjoy the treats. I’ve checked out their lookbook and can promise their upcoming selection is covet-able and perfect for the balmy summer we’re inevitably headed for. Hope to see you there!
Cezanne Hair at Danny Jelaca
I knew early on that some people had it way easier than I did in the proverbial styling department. As soon as I was old enough to play with my mother’s hair and makeup tools, I began daydreaming of better-tressed days. By the age of twelve, I was begging for relaxers. Following several years of experimentation with chi’s, blow outs, relaxers, and keratin treatments, Cezanne’s offer to try their new smoothing product was a welcome invitation. Five days and two washes later, I am declaring this the good hair gene my parents weren’t able to give me in utero. I forgive you, Mom.
MBFW Swim: Day 1
10 THINGS I LEARNED ON THE FIRST DAY OF SWIM WEEK
- Miami weather spares no one. Always have a backup plan.
- The fashion crowd will weather any storm in the name of runway.
- Don’t expect anything to run on time. The fashion crowd will make it to said runway show at least one hour post call time.
- Never wear heels to a beach party. Getting sand between your toes is festive. Getting sand in your Louboutins is tragic.
- Go for a less complicated beauty regime. That stack of makeup it took to make me look presentable melted right off the minute I stepped into Miami’s perpetual humidity for the poolside show.
- Skip the flat iron. Blow-drying curly hair in 90% humidity is an exercise in futility. One I’m ashamed I continue to attempt.
- Wear what you like and are comfortable in. Whether it’s a bodycon dress or jeans and a tee, style is a very personal thing. Fashion week is the time to be true to that. Trying to pull off anything else, no matter how on-trend, will just be unflattering.
- Always opt for the party with free cocktails. It makes the tardiness much more tolerable.
- No matter what, the show WILL go on. And it will be fabulous.
- Despite all the challenges, I’m ready and eager to do it all over again.
