Amigos for Kids Event

I spent my Saturday working on the Amigos for Kids Celebrity Domino Night at Jungle Island. If you’ve never experienced this phenomenon, it’s about as Cuban as you can get without being in Little Havana’s Domino Park (or Cuba, of course). There were guayaberas galore as Miami’s elite gathered to benefit a cause dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect while sipping Bacardi rum and gnoshing on gastronomy from a slew of delectable eateries (Pasta Factory, your canolies were worth all the calories).

I admit my photography skills were not quite up to par (try running around for 8 hours while parrots incessantly squawk at you and see if your hands don’t shake – though you’re probably well-trained if you grew up with a Cuban mom), but I still wanted to share these with you. It’s not every day you get to experience tropical stilt walkers, salsa dancers, auctioned art, and a flash mob under the same roof. And if you do, let me know what the heck you’re doing for a living because that makes my life seem just a tad deprived.

By the way, major thanks to the ladies at Dior for the amazing five-minute makeover. It made all the difference in setting the tone for the rest of the night.

Enjoy the pics. You can hover over them for more info. (And, yes, I do have an unhealthy obsession with collecting event tags. I see it’s become a thing lately. Just let it be.) As for the critters all the way at the bottom, they’re just my favorite ones to come home to.

P.S. I’m now a new fan of Nicole Martinez. Anyone who can capture croqueta art is a winner in my book. Check out her site for some really fantastic prints. I hate that my iPhone skills don’t do her work any justice. But I HAD to share this with everyone.

MMIFW ’12 Recap

Another day, another fashion week in Miami. Miami Metropolitan International Fashion Week (say that three times fast) made its debut last night at LMNT in Midtown, just a couple of months after Miami Beach International Fashion Week wrapped its shows. And while both aim to make a name for Miami in the fashion-sphere, MMIFW hopes to distinguish itself by focusing on “designers that are on the cusp” of recognition. Though that remains as yet to be seen, you can still indulge in pics from last night’s events from the perspective of my plastic wine cup. *Clink*

P.S. Did you spot the potential future Housewife?

P.P.S. Props to the student designers for strutting their stuff last night. Here’s to hoping your names become household fodder.

Year Two

Today I’m excited to celebrate year two of the blog and all that’s come along with it. When I started Bubbles & Ink, it was nothing more than a hobby – something for my friends and family to see what I was up to. Two years later, I’m so grateful for everyone who’s decided to keep reading and all the amazing opportunities that have come of it.

To celebrate, I rounded up some of my favorite posts from the past couple of years. Just click on the pic and it’ll take you to the original post. I hope you enjoy reminiscing as much as I did. And if there’s something you’d like to see more of, let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear what you’d like to see in year three. Thanks for reading… xxoo

Wynwood Art

There’s really no particular reason for sharing this art with you other than it’s long overdue. And, truthfully, we could all use a little gratuitous culture on occasion. All of these images were captured during the Wynwood Art Walk, one of the best ways to indulge in free culture and deliciously tempting food trucks. The next one is coming up on March 10 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Until then, here’s something to get you through the day. Oh, and Happy Leap Day!

Edgar Allan Poe’s Birthday (We guess…)

It seems that today marks the date of the best guess for the birthday of famed poet Edgar Allan Poe, acclaimed for such works as The Tell-Tale Heart,  The Pit and the Pendulum, and, of course, The Raven.

Even as a child, I remember being strangely drawn to the dark beauty of Poe’s works. I heard the thumping of that tell-tale heart and the squawking of that persistent raven and knew I wanted to create experiences with my words.

Today, I grow more fascinated still and continue to marvel at the poetry that lives on in glorious infamy. In his honor, I’ll proudly wear my Raven tee and brush up on some favorites. If you’d like to learn more about Poe’s works, check out this great, free online collection of stories and poetry.

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore…” – The Raven

The Man Repeller at the Webster Miami

Leandra Medine’s double-fisting arm party took Miami over the weekend and I was somehow able to stumble upon the action and say, “hey,” for a couple minutes before the glammy staff at the Webster started eyeing me and my $7 Target jeans, probably wondering how I’d slipped past the proverbial velvet rope. No matter. The store was exquisitely curated and made for some fun wish-list building (read: Chanel-lusting).

Thanks to the Man Repeller for being so gracious and hanging out with a couple of aspiring fashionistas between styling sessions. And thanks to the Webster for letting us frolick among the racks of couture we hope to someday afford. You can keep up with the Man Repeller here and shop the Webster’s newly redesigned online shop here.

Special thanks to Yve for trailing me with a camera and documenting the experience.

Wynwood Walls & Peter Tunney’s Art

I’ve lived in Miami my whole life and will admit to often having a love/hate – and sometimes even a love-to-hate – relationship with this oh-so-Magic(al) City. But even as I sit in my living room listening to the echo-y hollering of my proud Cuban neighbors bouncing off the hallway walls, I will admit there are corners of the city I enjoy stumbling upon. One such location is the garage-turned-gallery tucked away behind Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, where my husband and I (along with the Yelp Elite Miami crowd) enjoyed a free Peter Tunney exhibit a few nights ago.

After a wonderfully busy week of food, art, and fashion, it’s nice to settle in and blog for a bit to share some of my favorite moments before heading out for more of the former. I guess tonight feels like one of the rare love-to-love variety. Check out some cool scenes below. Hope you’re all having  a great weekend!

What Reality? Live Screen-printing

P.S. Relax – I, too, am Cuban and will admit to being a teeny bit loud on occasion. It’s just a little harder to write with 8 other Cubans having a quiet discussion down the hall.

Event Idea: Live Screen-Printing

I love the idea of having live art at an event and last night’s live screen-printing team from What Reality? did a great job of entertaining the Yelp Elite Miami crowd with their fashion a la carte services at Wynwood Kitchen and Bar.

If you have the location, What Reality? will bring a  portable screen press and print shirts live at your next event. Check them out on Facebook for booking info and to see pics of their events, tees, and equipment.
