Friday Giveaway: Bubble Buttons

I know it’s been a long week for everyone, what with the election and all that inevitable controversy Florida always brings to it (smh). So let’s end it on a good note with a quick Friday giveaway. If you’re not familiar with Bubble Buttons, here’s your chance to get acquainted.

Bubble Buttons are basically a sticker for that concave home button on your iDevice. I’ve been using it on my iPhone 4S for a little over a week now and can’t imagine going back to not having it; it actually makes my home button easier to use. Maybe it’s just me, but it feels more responsive. I usually have terrible luck with home buttons, so this has been a great little save for me. At only $4.95 per six-pack, it’s a great little fix with a lot of personality (check mine out in the pic above).

You can win your own six-pack today by: 1) Leaving a quick comment here with your preferred choice (Yummy Pack or Mustache Pack) and 2) Liking the Bubbles & Ink Facebook page if you haven’t already. Simple as that. I’ll announce the winner here at the end of the day. Contest ends at 5:00 p.m. ET.

You can also win an iPad 2 from Bubble Buttons by going to their Facebook page and liking them to get all the contest details. Best of luck to everyone with all these freebies!

UPDATE: Thanks so much to everyone who entered! Congratulations to our two winners, Vanessa Rocha and Jenny Lee Lewis! Please message me on Facebook to claim your prize!

And Baby Makes 3

Hello, old friend. It’s been a while. Two months, to be exact. Coming back from New York following a grueling tourist run left me depleted of any energy, motivation, or inspiration to post anything worth reading. But the truth is, it probably had more to do with the fact that I was newly pregnant (surprise!) than it did with actually dodging tourists in Manhattan — though that really didn’t help anyone, either.

I’m now about four months pregnant and feeling much more energetic (and a lot less pukey), but the first three months were especially trying. This is my first child and I’d heard quite a few horror stories of what I could expect to endure. But nothing can really prepare you for the toll your hormones will take on your body. For the first time in my adult life, I was not in control of anything and it was driving me absolutely nuts. Every day was a gamble. Some days were ok at best. Others were downright immobilizing. I spent a week in bed trying to figure out what was hurting the most — I was discovering parts I’d never been familiar with before. And also discovering they could hurt to the point of needing constant rest.

I was also surprised to learn I couldn’t stand perfume, makeup, or anything with even a mild fragrance. So there went the product review and sampling I’d planned following that incredible loot I’d snagged at the NYC events. And then there was the morning sickness…the kind that lasted all day. I’ll spare you the details of the rest of these magical symptoms. Suffice it to say it was basically a permanent state of hangover but without all the fun the night before. Also a little bit like a second run at adolescent puberty.

But, mostly, it was a three-month period of hermit-like existence. I’m grateful for my self-employed status. I don’t know how other women do it and I seriously curtsy to their bravery and endurance. Still, despite the physical torment and daily symptom discovery, Tony and I are incredibly excited and can’t wait to find out whether we’ll be welcoming a little girl or boy. We’re now eagerly preparing for his/her arrival, which means I may be a little slow on the posts and reviews, but I’ll do my best to keep them coming. I’m starting to feel much more like myself, so I’m optimistic about that.

Anyway, I couldn’t wait to share the news and hope to be able to share more of the process with my readers. There must be other mommies or moms-to-be out there who can share in the process. If you are, I’d love to hear from you. Trust me, any little bit of encouragement helps. Xx

P.S. Thanks to my incredibly talented husband for the awesome pregnancy announcement (photo above).

IFB Con, September ’12

This post is admittedly long overdue, but the event was certainly not forgettable by any means. Having attended my first IFB Con back in February, I was eager to return and see some familiar faces. Being in a room with some of the best-dressed bloggers from all around (there were some ladies from Australia and Germany representing the international scene) was inspiring and made me want to immediately overhaul my closet. There was an incredible collection of shoes — you can see a couple of my favorites in neon and metallic on Corrie and Jenn, and a stunning pair of Pradas on Krystal Bick — and a Nine West Shoe Confessions booth to atone for the addiction.

I snapped some shots of my favorite moments to share with you, like Coco Rocha’s interview with Derek Blaserg, whose quotable phrase, “I knew I wanted to live among the magazines,” immediately resonated with me.

Corrie, Metitia, and Jenn: It was wonderful meeting you! Candace, SO lovely to see you again! Maria Carolina, I’m so sorry you missed it but hope to catch you again soon! xx

Lucky FABB

Jean Godfrey, Lucky Magazine, Lucky FABB, Lauren Conrad

You know how most little girls dreamed about their wedding day and played dress-up as they walked down a make-believe aisle? Well, I’m not even joking when I say I used to play editor and sketched fashion while working in my make-believe New York City office (I really wasn’t much of an outdoor kid). As soon as my mother would allow, I subscribed to every glossy I could get my hands on and dreamed of one day having the chance to work with these amazing magazine people in any sort of capacity.

And while an editorship remains for me the job I’ll always covet, walking into Lucky FABB was every bit of a realization of that amazing feeling that accompanied every childish daydream. The memory still overwhelms me a bit because it was hard to believe that I was in such incredible company. Alicia Lund from Cheetah is the New Black, Ginger Harris from Electric Blogarella, Maria Tettamanti from The Wordy Girl, and Erin Hiemstra from Apartment 34 (to name a handful) were all in attendance — and those were just my fellow peers.

The panels were comprised of incredibly inspiring individuals who were happy to sit and chat with us for a while about whatever we were curious enough to ask. Terry Lundgren, CEO of Macy’s, talked about Nicole Richie’s collaboration with the retailer, Rachel Zoe announced another season for her show and showed off a glittery new jewelry line, Leandra Medine of Man Repeller talked about dealing with negative comments, Lauren Bush inspired us as she shared her struggle with starting FEED and how far it has come in just five years, Lauren Conrad looked like a perfect little doll in a very polished Paper Crown dress and Mary Jane’s from her new collection at Khol’s as she dished about wanting to leave behind her Laguna Beach past, and Anna Sui sat with Simon Doonan and was just her incredibly cool self as she talked about what inspires her to create her wildly successful collections, season after season (world travel and good music like Jack White’s new album, in case you were wondering).

My head’s still reeling from all the excitement – and all the goodies I’ve yet to unpack – so forgive me if I’ve rambled on. But it’s not every day you get a little taste of exactly what you want to do and who you hope to become. And so, syrupy as it may sound, if you’ve been reading along, thanks for helping me get just that much closer to that dream job. I hope to someday repay you in copious amounts of freebies.

El Main Evento

I’m sure you all had very exciting plans for this evening but if they didn’t involve being ringside watching a few rounds of Mexican wrestling with a taco in hand, I feel compelled to inform you that you’ve missed out. On what, I’m not quite certain. But there’s something to be said for men (and one helluva badass chick) in metallic spandex flying through the air in the name of honor – and a big shiny belt.

We headed down to the food truck rally with our favorite Mexican in tow (see below in all his pony-tailed glory) and celebrated Mexican Independence Day at El Main Evento, complete with Mariachis and Mexican wrestlers. This was my first time witnessing such a spectacle, so I truly went just for the food (GastroPod’s short rib sliders and Taco Heat’s nachos made me shamelessly lick my fingers).

But it wasn’t long before I was hollering with the rest of them, marveling at the flying masks as they tumbled and rolled off each other with the kind of grace that, to the untrained eye, would likely seem to border on homo-eroticism. But I digress. It was a damn good show — one that made me a fan as soon as female wrestler Angel Rose strode in that ring with a flower in her hair and body-slamming victory in her heart. You can’t help but cheer on a girl who can dominate her opposition in a perfectly styled ensemble.

If you missed El Main Evento, you can still catch the food trucks every third Saturday at the Magic City Casino or click here for a daily schedule.

Glossy Box vs. Birchbox

After a recent inquiry as to whether I should sign up for Glossy Box or Birchbox, I actually had the chance to compare them side by side after receiving them as a gift at Lucky FABB. Here are pics of what I was given so you can see for yourself and draw your own conclusions. Personally, I’m still not sure if it’s necessarily worth the monthly expense but if you have a subscription to either one (or any beauty box, for that matter), I’d love to hear what you think.

Left: Glossy Box. Right: Birchbox

Here’s a list of the exact contents in each box:

  • Figs & Rouge: Lip, Face & Body Balm (0.26 oz)

Back from New York

And so I am back from New York, feeling a bit more run down than I’d anticipated, though I suspect it has less to do with the perpetual adrenaline buzz that comes with attending consecutive fashion events and more to do with my father’s relentless passion for overly-saturated tourist attractions. The old man is not quite so old at a young 57 and most literally (and to my embarrassment) strode circles around me in his sensible walking shoes (props to ya, Pops).

This trip was half business, half pleasure, and all sweaty aggravation at the tourist groups taking up 75% of the sidewalks in Manhattan with their matching t-shirts and collective disdain for deodorant. But it’s a small price to pay, and one I’d pay again willingly, to spend time with the ones you love — and bring home pounds of beauty swag from the fashion events. Let’s not forget those.

As I recover, I’ll be working on editing images from IFB Con and Lucky FABB, and the rest of my week in New York. For now, here are a couple of teasers. (I’m still in awe of having been in the presence of the incredible Anna Sui). Enjoy.

Fashion’s Night Out 2012

I’m not sure how many of you are also stuck at home waiting out Isaac but I can’t help seeking a distraction from the storm. Most of South Florida has been fortunate enough to still have power so far, so I’ve taken to planning for my New York trip.

For the first time, I’ll be in NYC for Fashion’s Night Out and I’m pretty eager to see how events compare in the city that started it all. Scheduled to take place Thursday, September 6th, FNO will kick off Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, which runs through the 13th and will feature collections for Spring 2013.

If you won’t be in New York for FNO, there will still be events taking place in over 500 cities all around the country, so click here to check out what’s happening in your area and online. Also, as in previous years, the official FNO Collection will be sold in stores and online with forty percent of proceeds from sales going to the New York City AIDS Fund in the New York Community Trust. This year’s official tote, designed by Brahmin, is already available for purchase on their site.

I hope to see some of you in New York for all these fun fashion events. Let me know if you’ll be around. I’d love to know what everyone is planning. And if you’re riding out the storm, stay safe and dry. Here’s to hoping Isaac is kind and swift.

The Tropical Smokey Tutorial

What’s more fun than playing with makeup with one of South Florida’s (maybe even the U.S.) most talented stylists? Not much, in my book. Last week I had the chance to sample some of Revlon’s new products, among them their Colorstay eye shadow palette in “Inspired”, which, frankly didn’t inspire much other than fear for the sheer fact that I just don’t know what to do with blue eye shadow without looking like my mother circa 1982.

Enter Lutz. Lutz is one of those people I’m always in awe of having on my list of contacts. He’s the kind of artist who can literally pluck two hairs from your brows and suddenly make them look like they belong in a beauty editorial (I’m not exaggerating. I’ve lived through this.). If there were such a thing as the Esthetics Olympics, he’d be your Michael Phelps. So he’s the first (and only) one I called when I needed help figuring this out. What resulted is something I think we decided to call the tropical smokey because it felt like you shouldn’t be doing anything less than salsa dancing in some really amazing shoes while wearing blue glitter mascara on your lashes.

Below, I give you our step-by-step process, which should work just fine with other colors as long as you apply the basic principles of shading and highlighting. It was easier to achieve than I would have thought and all you really need are some basics. So get to it and let me know how it goes. By the way, am I the only one who feels this way about blue eye shadow?

The tools: A quad shadow palette (or four similar complementary tones), two trusty brushes for blending, applying, and highlighting (he really only used two!), a primer (we used Revlon’s), an angle brush for lining, a volumizing mascara, and a color/glitter mascara for that extra sparkle.

  • Before you start: Prime! Be sure to apply primer evenly over your lid to ensure a good canvas that will make those colors stay – and pop. Also, if necessary, fill in those brows with a pencil closest to your natural hair color.
  • Step 1: Apply the lightest cream shade all over you lid.
  • Step 2: Apply light green on half the lid and into the crease. Also line your eye a bit with the green. Use a little in the inner corner of your eyes to highlight with some color.
  • Step 3: Contour go around your eye with that darker blue (dry brush, no water yet).
  • Step 4: Wet that angle brush and use the dark blue shade as a liner.
  • Step 5: Lightly add some blue to the crease to play up the color.
  • Step 6: Apply a coat of black to your top and bottom lashes (lightly on the bottom) and follow with color and/or glitter for the bottom for a fun, flirty look.

Some notes: These shadows had great, build-able pigment. Use a light touch for a subtle look and apply by layering for more pop. You can also dip your brush in a little water for a more dramatic effect (which works with an angle brush to turn the darker shade into liner). For color and/or glitter mascara, apply your basic mascara first and then just dab the glitter/color on top of that, rather thanswiping. That prevents the glitter from sliding off your lashes. We also used Makeup For Ever HD Powder around the eye for that halo highlighting effect.

Thanks so much to Lutz Karpf for lending his time and talent to my exploration in makeup.

Revlon Expression Experiment

This post brought to you by Revlon. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I think of Revlon, it takes me back to my childhood when I’d raid my mother’s makeup kit and pull out that bright red lipstick she wore everywhere (work, dinner, grocery shopping) to practice carefully putting it on my four-year-old self and then wiping it off, thinking she wouldn’t notice. It’s been a while since then – longer than I’d care to admit – but  the feeling is still the same. There’s always that little bit of excitement when I walk by their makeup line, like we’re sharing some innocent little secret we both know she was aware of.

When Revlon recently offered up the chance to take part in their Expression Experiment Challenge, where they’re encouraging women to break out of their regular makeup routines and try out new, bolder colors, my inner child did a little happy dance. I received a kit containing their Colorstay nail polish and eye shadow, Photoready Eye Primer + Brightener and Perfecting Primer, a Cherry Tart Lip Butter, and that iconic Fire & Ice Lustrous Lipstick, all of which I managed to use during my recent staycation.

The results of the experiment are pictured below, but I have to confess I haven’t had this much fun playing with makeup since my toddler days. I mean, sure, I play with makeup regularly, but it’s not every day you get to paint your toes with blue nail polish for the sake of “science.”

I’m really glad I was given the chance to take this on. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, which is something I feel we women rarely do once we’ve figured out our makeup routine. I encourage you to take on the challenge yourself and post your own pics. I’d love to see what kinds of looks you come up with. Leave me a comment and let me know how it goes. Check out the Revlon Expression Experiment Facebook app for details on how to get started.
