MBFW Swim: Day 1

MBFW Swim 2014 | Bubbles & Ink Blog

10 THINGS I LEARNED ON THE FIRST DAY OF SWIM WEEK

  1. Miami weather spares no one. Always have a backup plan.
  2. The fashion crowd will weather any storm in the name of runway.
  3. Don’t expect anything to run on time. The fashion crowd will make it to said runway show at least one hour post call time.
  4. Never wear heels to a beach party. Getting sand between your toes is festive. Getting sand in your Louboutins is tragic.
  5. Go for a less complicated beauty regime. That stack of makeup it took to make me look presentable melted right off the minute I stepped into Miami’s perpetual humidity for the poolside show.
  6. Skip the flat iron. Blow-drying curly hair in 90% humidity is an exercise in futility. One I’m ashamed I continue to attempt.
  7. Wear what you like and are comfortable in. Whether it’s a bodycon dress or jeans and a tee, style is a very personal thing. Fashion week is the time to be true to that. Trying to pull off anything else, no matter how on-trend, will just be unflattering.
  8. Always opt for the party with free cocktails. It makes the tardiness much more tolerable.
  9. No matter what, the show WILL go on. And it will be fabulous.
  10. Despite all the challenges, I’m ready and eager to do it all over again.

Favorite Finds: K. Slademade

K. slademade, pink pastel leather clutch

For most women, a shoe obsession trumps any other item in the accessories universe. But for me, it’s always been bags. Give me a clutch over heels any day. And if it’s handmade of buttery leather, all the more enticing. And this is what makes K. slademade so delectable. Kelsea’s pieces are the staples every girl should keep at hand. They are chic, understated little luxuries made for day-to-day functional glam. Oh, and they can be monogrammed (swoon). I’m seriously eyeing the tip pouch in pink pastel, the Brooklyn foldover clutch in black with the blue zipper (!!), and the Heather crossbody in red poppy.

Snatch one of these up for yourself with FREE SHIPPING. Use code BUBBLES at checkout.

Trends: The Ampersand Obsession

Ampersand Collage on Bubbles & Ink

This recent ampersand logo trend has particularly caught my attention because it’s long been an obsession of mine as the quintessential symbol for my name (my initials before marriage were A.M.P.) combined with my love of writing and thus vintage typewriters. Does that make sense? Regardless, I’m a sucker for good typography design accents (I do love that Bubbles & Ink logo), so I’ve compiled a little cluster of cool pieces that I wouldn’t mind adding to my own collection. What do you think of this ampersand trend? I’m obsessed with that marquee lamp. Got any favorites?

Tanee Giveaway + Swim Wishlist

Tanee Tan Line Corrector Giveaway

It’s now been ten days since the official start of summer, which means we are only a couple of days away from the Fourth and what always feels like the real start of bathing suit season. Normally, this would be the time when I’d break into a bit of a panicked sweat, considering this curvy Cuban body doesn’t play nice with teeny bikinis. But today also makes ten weeks since Lucy was born. And pushing a small person out of your body tends to make you see it quite differently.

Granted, I still have my hangups and I know I have a long way to go in terms of personal goals. But I also understand that these bumps and curves are a little more pronounced because, well, I made a baby. And that’s pretty damn fantastic. So I’ll bask in this new self-confidence as long as I can and hope it lasts long enough to get me through bathing suit season (and the rest of the year in Miami). In the meantime, I’ve picked out some one-piece numbers that actually feel pretty sexy. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Wanderlust: New York City

NYC-Buildings

It’s a funny thing, parenthood. It’s Saturday, we’ve got a babysitter for 24 hours, and the best and most exciting use I can find for my time is catching up on work and running errands. And this makes me perfectly happy. I was tinkering around on my site, making updates, when I came across this draft of images from my last trip to Manhattan in September 2012. It was fashion week, I was attending some very trendy events, and, newly pregnant, decided it was a good idea to fit into an obscenely tight pair of red skinny jeans. I regretted it almost immediately when, two hours later, I realized I’d forgotten to factor in my newly growing belly’s need for space when sitting. Thankfully, Lucy is now out and safely on the other side of the bump with no zipper marks to speak of.

Favorite Finds: Gigglosophy

Favorite Finds: Gigglosophy on Bubbles & Ink

Like most of the great little boutiques I’ve been frequenting lately, I discovered today’s Favorite Finds shop on Instagram. (I was actually the lucky winner of one of their contests!) Gigglosophy is an adorable little shop on Etsy with covet-able trinkets galore at incredibly reasonable prices for such great quality. I’m obsessed with their ampersand charm necklace and though I did win the gold pave bracelet in the pic above, I snagged the mint and white link bracelets for myself soon after.

For the next few days, you can pick up a few of your own pieces at a discounted price. Readers of Bubbles & Ink will get 20% off now through July 5th. Use code BUBBLES20 at checkout. Enjoy!

Favorite Finds: Stephanie Lian’s Closet

Stephanie Lian's Closet Discount Code on Bubbles & Ink

My love of accessories knows no bounds – probably because it’s the ONE thing we can layer on here in swelteringly sunny Miami. Which is why I’ve become pretty great at sniffing out a deal on the  trends that make my otherwise very casual closet something more than just basic tanks and tees. But scoring a find isn’t fun unless I’m sharing the joy with someone, so Favorite Finds Fridays is my way of sharing the love with you.

This week, I bring you Stephanie Lian’s Closet, a little shop with some major style. This is the kind of shop that offers you accessories like that statement necklace you absolutely need for the season but at a fraction of the cost the other retailers are charging. I’ve personally picked up a few items for myself and rocked them in New York during fashion week with the same style the bigger names were offering.

And thanks to the very generous girl behind this shop, you get to try them out with an even deeper discount. Readers of Bubbles & Ink will get 40% off all regular priced jewelry items now through June 30th by entering code BUBBLES at checkout. Get on it, ladies! And let me know what you find!

A Girl’s Guide to Beer

At the Funky Buddha Brewery Grand Opening

The thing about beer is that I didn’t really appreciate it at all until I met my husband. I hate to admit it, but I’d often turned my nose up at even the finest brew before Tony introduced me to IPA’s. My love of brut champagne made this my go-to flavor. It’s been quite the happy marriage on both accounts ever since. Which brings me to today’s post in honor of Father’s Day. I don’t often have guest bloggers, but when I do, I make sure they’re experts on their subjects. And few people are bigger experts on beer than my friend MP.

We recently attended the opening of the Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, which inspired a post I thought would please my beer-loving husband on his first Father’s Day. Today, MP has lent me his encyclopedic knowledge of beer to bring all you ladies up to speed on what you need to know about the frothy stuff and what you can try next time you’re out with your beer-drinking counterpart. Hope you enjoy it. And Happy Father’s Day to all the great dads I know. Cheers to you on your day.

P.S. Just wanted to note that I certainly don’t mean to imply that all women are ignorant about brews and the like. I know there are plenty of ladies out there who are quite well-versed in all manner of topic related to beer. To those women, I offer a toast to your knowledge and only wish I’d been enlightened sooner. Xx – Alicia

P.P.S. Check out the pic of the Most Interesting Man in South Florida and the street style shots at the end of the post. I’m all about those leg warmers in a non-ironic way.
